Gaming's Most Infamous Controversies

Classic video game controversies serve as a a warning sign that even the most innocent-looking entertainment can sometimes be marred by real-world issues. One such example is the infamous "Easter egg" controversy surrounding the game "Wolfenstein 3D," where some users discovered a hidden message referring to Adolf Hitler.

The message in question read "heil hitler" which many players found disturbing given the historical context of World War II and the barbaric acts of the past. This controversy eventually led to the game's developers issuing an apology, and some countries banning the game.

Due to some last-minute issues with localization, the Japanese version included a rather suggestive cutscene depicting one of the main characters. Consequently, many players in Western countries felt that the scene was entirely out of place and made the game more objectionable than intended.

Additionally, the infamous "Hot Coffee" mod scandal involving the game "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas" has become synonymous with gaming industry infamous scandals. A mod created by a user allowed players to access some of the game's more inappropriate material, which some felt was not suitable for all ages. As a result, the ESRB re-rated the game from M to AO for "Adults Only." Several retailers also chose to pull the game from store shelves.
